The year 2020 has been particularly difficult for everyone due to the epidemic, especially for the less fortunate. This is especially true for the “Otara Village”, a poor village in a remote part of Auckland’s South End.

This “village” is made up of mainly elderly and disadvantaged people. Because of the area’s reputation for poverty, it often attracts the attention of the kindness people who give food to them from time to time. This is why a year ago the local board set up a charity called “Otara Kai Village”. However, this charity has also attracted the attention of the Chinese community in New Zealand.

With two days to go before Christmas, early this morning, the President of the Pakuranga Chinese Association, Mr Hong Ben Li, Vice President Mr Zhao Hua, Treasurer Ms Huang Huifang and Board Member Mr Sheng Jiaxun prepared a truckload of food for the poor village. Ansheng Chen also brought seven boxes of bread and food to the “coffee shop” and set up in the poor village; within a small effort to bring them some warmth and make them feel better this Christmas.
New Zealand newspaper reporter Cao Zhengjia was also on hand. When the two people in charge of the Otara Kai Village saw the amount of food delivered by the Chinese, they were very excited and thanked them. The reporter saw that the shelves was almost empty before the food arrived. Later on, the staff filling all the shelves with potatoes, carrots, onions, cabbage, pumpkins, fruit, tinned food, tuna, tinned soy beans in aubergine sauce, bread and biscuits.

“We are working so hard under the epidemic, as many people living close to the airport area as they worked at the airport before they failed of jobs. Cause no flight and the airport almost shut down.” said the director of the Otara Kai Village. As those group of people have no other skills that they can use to earn a living, so they have no way of finding a job again. What we do now (The Otara Kai Village), we don’t want to call ourselves a ‘food bank’ because sometimes it’s difficult to ask for help. So we opened the door to welcome all the people in the area. By the way, we hope people do not felt embarrassing when they took the food. And we believe that all the people who come and take the food are the ones who really need it. And of course the government also subsidises our wages to the maximum, so they don’t feel too bad”.

When the reporter asked how he found the place and what his plans were for supporting them, he said, “We are very happy to be here. President Hong said, “We found out about the place and many people need help during the epidemic through Li Yongjie, from the municipality. Then three months ago we decided to mobilise each of our members to make a contribution to assist them. Christmas is coming, we hope that the people here will also have a good Christmas, so we organised this donation again. We also have long-term plans to support the community in the future. During the epidemic, our members donated over N$18,000 and $1900 with other communities to buy an ambulance for St John. So our members are very caring and willing to give a helping hand to the people in need.
We are very pleased that we Chinese have such a warm heart to help the local people in need. Their donations to the locals are not only a sign of solidarity, but also a sign of friendship between them and the locals. We sincerely hope that the epidemic will pass and everyone back to normal life. The world will be a harmonious place when people are filled with love.
