Inspiring Immigration Story 《Chasing Dreams in the Southern Hemisphere》 — Pilot Screening and Feedback Session
The 《Chasing Dreams in the Southern Hemisphere》production team worked tirelessly over four years, persisting through the COVID-19 pandemic without giving up. Their dedication and perseverance finally brought the film to completion. On the afternoon of May 2nd, a pilot screening and appreciation event was held at the cinema inside the Rewi Alley Memorial Hall at UUNZ Institute of Business in Auckland—alongside a guided tour of the memorial itself.
In attendance were the film’s production team, special guests who had made significant contributions to the project, and over 30 representatives from media outlets including 《Mandarin Pages》, 《New Zealand Report》, 《The Shepherd Media》, and The 《New Zealand Papers》.
《Chasing Dreams in the Southern Hemisphere》 is one of the featured elements in the 《Entrepreneurs of New Zealand》 series. The film’s completion—after four years of effort and perseverance through the pandemic—is a testament to the spirit of dedication among the team. The pilot screening and memorial visit on May 2nd marked a major milestone for the project.
Guests at the event, including top Hong Kong cinematography mentor Mr. Po Man Wong, Chairman of the New Hope Charitable Foundation Mr. Anson Chen, Senior Consultant of the Rewi Alley Memorial Hall Ms. Cathy Zhang, Justice of the Peace Mr. Steven Huang, as well as members of New Zealand’s local film industry, were all astonished to learn that none of the cast and crew had professional backgrounds in film. Every participant was a part-time amateur with no prior experience in the film industry. Their impressive work drew heartfelt praise from all attendees.
Mr. Po Man Wong in particular commended the team, saying that despite being non-professionals, they were able to express a unique style and vibrant spirit through their performances. He noted that while the story may not have unfolded along a single main narrative thread, it still successfully conveyed the stories and journeys of the three young protagonists.
Although the film doesn’t unfold through a single narrative thread, it successfully presents and explains the key stories of its three young protagonists.
Justice of the Peace Steven Huang and local film professional John Albert after viewing the pilot, both praised the film as exceptionally well-made. Steven noted that he hadn’t expected it to be so engaging—“you just want to keep watching to see what happens next,” he said. Remarkably, all the Chinese and non-Chinese actors in the film were first-time performers, yet their acting was vivid and convincing—an unexpected surprise.
Veteran media figure Mr. Wende Su, owner of the 《Mandarin Pages》, with 40 years of industry experience, even made a special phone call after the event to comment on what he saw as one of the film’s standout scenes.
Such enthusiastic praise from the audience undoubtedly served as strong encouragement and motivation for the entire production team. Everyone involved understood that some of the compliments might have been said in a spirit of support and encouragement—especially considering the presence of Mr. Po Man Wong, a top cinematography instructor from Hong Kong. With his long history of working on major productions, his involvement created a sense of pressure for the team, particularly for the screenwriter, Ms. Susan Li. Although Susan gave an introduction at the beginning to explain the background of the production and asked the audience to watch with understanding and compassion, she still felt nervous.
Faced with such positive feedback, the production team was thrilled and deeply grateful for the guests’ affirmation and understanding of the film.
Special thanks were also extended to the early champions of the film: the Chinese Women Association of New Zealand, the renowned producer/director/voice actor Ms. Hua Lin, and Ms. Fang Lu, producer and makeup artist at “August First Film Studio”. Thanks also go to acclaimed Hong Kong director Lik-chi Lee known for directing many of Stephen Chow’s classic comedies—renowned award-winning Hong Kong director/producer Chi Sum Ko, and veteran actor Bei Liu. With their strong support, guidance, and even participation, the project was able to avoid being abandoned mid-way.
On the day of the pilot screening, attendees also visited the Rewi Alley Memorial Hall, commemorating the great revolutionary, educator, and international friend. They learned about his lifelong dedication to China’s revolutionary cause. While many may have heard of Rewi Alley, few fully understand the magnitude of his contributions to China’s revolution and development. Through the insightful explanations by Cathy Zhang, senior consultant of the Memorial Hall, attendees gained a deeper appreciation for this legendary figure, who bridged political divides during the Second Sino-Japanese War to support China’s resistance effort.
